have to happen. ktvu' debora villalon is live in novato where people are crying for change. >> reporter: those cries will get louder as people learn the little girl did not make it. she was headed home from school when she was struck by an suv. a bike track, a bike tire, a girl's shoe. >> she just moved in maybe a month ago, maybe a little bit more. >> reporter: friends say she was new to the neighborhood and the hazard of this busy street. newly arrived into the state with her parents and two brothers. >> there's always cars going fast and i can tell people are not paying attention. >> reporter: the seventh grader fell head first from the suv.

even with a helmet suffering major injuries. that witness tried to comfort her as help was called but says the child was unconscious. she was stabilized at a local er then air lifted to children's hospital oakland. the man who hit her stopped and cooperated. >> being interviewed, answering questions. witnesses are confirming his statement at this point. >> reporter: i think that there needs to be a stop sign here. >> reporter: families say a crosswalk to get their kids over the busy boulevard and into their subdivision without darting across would be a huge safety improvement. >> after this i'm just scared to death about letting him ride. the cars come really, really fast. 50 some whatever-miles-an-hour and the bike path is right there. there's no separation. >> reporter: every effort was made to save the girl after she was air evac to oakland but her injuries were too severe. this fatality one of many on novato where it widens and

picks up speed as it head to the coast. debora villalon. police are looking for the mother of a girl who says she enlisted the help of her 10- year-old daughter to steal groceries. they say she stole her daughter to push the cart outside. when store workers confirmed the girl,keelin drove off. that was a week ago, the girl is now with her grandmother. 38-year-old charles lewis edwards was killed just minutes after leaving an apartment on vermont street. the shooting happened just after 6:30 last night. police say edwards was getting into a car when someone approached on foot and shot him several times. at this point, no arrests have been made. hundreds of people took to

the streets of oakland in a bid to stop violence and take back their community. more than 400 children, parents and teachers marched. a recent homicide in the area sparked this peace march. >> given the recent up tick in violence in aour neighborhood has been very important to gather the community together. >> reporter: oakland major jean quan did not march but was on hand to meet those who did. this evening's event was a success and they plan to have more in the future. tonight at 10:30, another march this one in san francisco. the call for peace there sparked by a series of recent events. a well respected teacher at albany middle school is under arrest accused of having an inappropriate relationship with

a student. amber lui found out that at least one parent said, there were red flags. >> reporter: a popular and trusted teacher, james asumisaki arrested yesterday with suspicion of a lewd act with a child under 14. >> i hope it's not true. he's a wonderful teacher, wopblderful summer camp, basketball coach -- wonderful summer camp basketball coach, i'm shocked. >> reporter: parents gathered for special meetings for parents of his students. >> my worry is the continuing of education. how it's going to be handled. i know my daughter had a lot of questions. i was told that there were a lot of students in tears today. >> reporter: students will be reassigned to other sixth grade classes. counselors are also available. >> i've had him for a teacher a month and he's already been super nice. >> reporter: one parent however said there were some red flags, she asked not to be identified to protect her children's privacy. >> he's way too friendly with

the kids. he made my daughter uncomfortable. he's very flirty. there were texts sent to children, rides given to young girls. >> reporter: he began teaching full time in 2008 known as mr. i he also coached volleyball and basketball. >> everyone in the district is devastated. >> reporter: according to the superintendent the report of an inappropriate relationship first came to officials early this week. that's when they went to police. this letter went out to parents on wednesday. police are investigating whether there's been other inappropriate contact. a bay area toll collector has been arrested on kidnapping and sexual assault chargings. 30-year-old johnny burton attacked a woman on laurel street. police say he threatened her with a gun and raped her. he's been hold on bail. he lives near the scene of the

crime and a pellet home was found in his home. the two alarm fire was reported around 4:00 this afternoon at magic sounds mobile home park on blossom hill road. a san jose fire captain says one mobile home had flames coming through the roof the fire then spread to the home next door. peninsula congresswoman spiers is one of those celebrating today. they were celebrating a vote that brought millions of the dollar for an electric brain that runs a train. campbell's soup is shutting down its sacramento plant and eliminating 7,000 jobs there. the announcement was made at a

7:00 meeting this morning. the change comes as campbell's is trying to cut costs. >> sacramento has the highest production cost per case of any plant in our network that's why we made the decision to close the plant. >> reporter: the plant is scheduled to close next july. cam campbells is also closing it's spice plant in san francisco. a small group of protesters is clashing with police at this hour. it is the same area where police evicted an occupy encampment early this morning. amber lee just arrived there morning on market street. al we -- amber what's going on there? >> reporter: julie we're at the interception of market and drum right across the street from the embarcader. we want to show you what we see right here. there's at least one dozen

police officers with helmets and batons. what we saw when we arrived was a group of men yelling at the officers. not clear what they were saying. a witness told us he saw that same group throwing plastic water bottles toward the officers a little earlier. but right now we don't see them doing anything. but there's also other officers. if you look beyond these officers by the bus stop, across the street you can see another row of police officers and police cars, that's the old reserve building and that's where they took down an encampment earlier today. and we're told by our witness that that appears to be what's agitating the protesters. they're upset that the police moved in and took down the encampment. that's why they're upset. i guess police moved in when some of the protesters may have been trying to remove the fencing that went up. that's our understanding. i went up to a police sergeant at the scene. he declined to talk to me and he says there's no one available at this time to give us more information. that's the latest from here,

people registered to the freedom party. eric rasmussen. in eight minutes tonight, voters lined up to cast their ballots. the voting that is already under way in some states as president oe obama and mitt romney try to hammer home their message. police seize marijuana plants during a massive raid. almost every home in the neighborhood was involved in growing the marijuana. police descended on that neighborhood yesterday. the marijuana plants have an estimated street value of more than 2-1/2 million dollars. they say agents arrested 15 people on a variety of drug related charges. authorities say they have three suspects in custody tonight in connection with the smash and grab robbery of a newark store. the suspects were among four

armed robbers who stormed zenna jewelers. the robbers opened fire in the shop, used their weapons to smash display cases and fled with a duffel bag full of stolen goods. raymond jefferson of san francisco and two teenagers from oakland and hayward are now in custody. a fourth robber remains at large. we want to bring you the latest now on that san francisco firefighter who we've been following as she fights breast cancer. we're told now that janet neves rivera underwent a double mastectomy yesterday and that she's doing well tonight. the department of public health had refused to allow rivera to use donated sick leave from her colleague firefighters. michael savage has been

violated the terms of his probation on check fraud charges. the terms ban him from using computers or the internet without permission from his probation officer. and one of the actresses in that film innocence of muslims is now suing the producer of the film. cindy lee garcia filed a lawsuit yesterday in los angeles. she claims nacula violated copyright law over her performance in the film. garcia says she was led to believe the movie was a historical adventure film called desert warrior. an exclusive new ktvu poll says the majority of californias are in favor of allowing illegal immigrants to reach citizenship. 14% said illegal immigrants should be able to work in the united states but only for a limited time. and 14% said all illegal immigrants should be deported.

it got pretty warm inland today. temperatures went down a couple of degrees. a marine layer pinched up a couple of degrees. guess what the marine layer came up a couple of degrees so it's going to be just a little bit cooler. i don't know if the inland guys will notice it much cooler but you will notice it cooler for a little while around the bay. we're going to see lots of upper 40s at the bay. there will be fog at the airport, san francisco. there'll be fog at the airport. we have some heat coming our way just in time for the weekend. fire concerns and even heat advisories possible. i'll be here with all those details. michigan authorities are once again following the tip on the disappearance of jimmy hoffa almost 40 years ago. a man dying of cancer told police he saw someone being

that suspended outfielder milky cabrera will not be returning to the team for the play offs. cabrera was having a tremendous season. but on august 15th he was suspended for 15 games by major league baseball after testing positive for muscle enhancing drugs. after that the team really came together. >> we talked about it, we still had the talent on this team to do it. and they showed it. and i think they wanted to prove it and they did. >> reporter: cabrera released a statement today saying he's disappointed to miss the play offs but is wishing his teammates the best. oakland police arrested a man tonight who they say was in the process of trying to rob an art gallery. officers say they had responded to a burglar alarm about 8:00 tonight and found a ladder on the side of the building. police are also looking for a

we have developing news out of oakland where a grocery outlet store was robbed tonight at gunpoint. witnesses tell ktvu that it happened just before closing time at 9:00 at the store on 29th and broadway. the witnesses and the security guard said two masked men with guns held up a clerk. the security guard said he was

ordered on the ground when he approached the robbers. he said that the clerk was hit in the head with a gun before the robbers took off with the money. the national hockey league cancelled all remains preseason games. the league had already called off exhibition games in september but there had been no word about games after that until now. the main sticking point in the lock out how to split more than $3 billion in annual revenue. the regular season is supposed to start on october 11th. and in san jose tonight, the shark tank is dark. businesses in the area had been counting on shark games. jana katsuyama is live in san jose and tell us the player's lock out is a blow for businesses. >> reporter: this was supposed to be a game night but the hp pavilion the shark tank locked up. and the streets possibly empty along with the restaurants and the bars. there weren't many people around san pedro area tonight.

restaurant tables were empty without the usual pregame crowds of shark fans and the money they bring in tips. >> a lot of us are going to college, or have kids. it's tough when we don't have revenue coming in. >> reporter: this parking lot usually overflowing during games, empty. >> it's very disappointing. we usually get a lot of customers from fans. without them not a lot of business will come here. >> reporter: as the nhl and players battle, business that depend on the game are taking a blow to their bottom line. henry tilack's bar usually takes in $10,000 but they say tonight they will be lucky if they make $2,500.

fulsome street toward garfield park. a police shooting sparked protests. organizers say that violence sends the wrong message. >> they don't know what we go through. they just come out when they feel they have to. >> reporter: and it doesn't help. >> it does not help. it just creates animosity. >> reporter: the protesters say they are not asking for much. just safety when they walk and play. dogs attacked at least one person and another dog. one of the pit bulls was killed, the other was wounded. details are sketchy but apparently the dogs had gotten loose. the person who was bitten managed to get to the hospital on their own. police say the attacks happened on rossen street and rosedale avenue. -- drew a red line on a

diagram of a bomb saying iran was close to completing the second stage of uranium enrich. >> i believe that faced with a clear red line iran will back down. and this will give more time for sanctions sanctions and diplomacy. >> president obama has denied israel's demand to draw a red line. president obama's campaign released a new television ad today using only mitt romney's own > ere are 47% of the people who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them. >> that audio was a replay of

the republican nominees remarks. romney was recorded saying roughly 47% of american households do not pay income taxes. obama campaign says that the words did not need any -- city college has already gone through significant changes. >> reporter: city college students are already feeling the pinch. 700 classes have been cut this year. >> i cannot get the classes that i wanted earlier this year. there's a high demand classes but low supply of courses. >> reporter: but city college must make many more sweeping changes or risk losing its accreditation and possibly closing. >> future of city college is

really what is at stake. >> reporter: guillermo villanueva is a counselor who works two jobs. he's concerned about what will happen. >> i'm still concerned about not having a job next year. >> there's a great concern about instability and fewer teachers and fewer teachers to do the work of the whole college. >> reporter: the proposals come after a scathing report in july by the accrediting commission that found deficiencies. >> people are working very hard to comply with the requirements of this report. >> reporter: the college is also focusing on students seeking degrees or transferring to four year schools. that could mean fewer so called enrichment classes that students take to improve skills or just for fun. >> they love the fact that they can come and take culinary classes and get jobs in our

a connection your whole house can count on. ♪ this was the scene early this morning when san francisco police took 45 people into custody in a sweep of the long- standing occupy camp outside the federal reserve bank on

market street. and at this hour a small group of those protesters has now returned to lower market street and is vowing to retake or reoccupy that encampment. ktvu's amber lee is now live at the scene to tell us what she's learned, amber. >> reporter: julie we're at the intersection of market, drum and california. let me show you what's to my right. some of these folks told us they are the protesters. they are upset that the police took down their encampment in front of the federal reserve building and that they plan to take it back over again when i asked them when they said as soon as possible but did not specify a time. if you look over here you can still see that there are a considerable amount of police presence. they are here and they're around the area and the outer perimeters as well. we also saw overturned garbage cans that we were told by witnesses that they knocked over some garbage cans and had the garbage strewn all over the street. a short while ago we also saw police officers going through some shrubs right in front of

the wells fargo building right behind me looking for objects that may have been thrown at some of the officers, a police officer told me that's what they were looking for. right now it's a pretty peaceful scene out here. no one has been hurt as far as we could see and the protesters are actually just gathering and talking amongst themselves. they have not said what else they plan to do. that is the latest from here. reporting live in downtown san francisco, sam -- amber lee. in mexico authorities captured the leader of an extremely violent saction of the zeta cartel. it's been reported that the u.s. provided the information that led to the raid. >> in london, wikileaks founder

asange launched out at president obama. asange made his comments from the equadorian embassy. he also claimed the uprising in the arab world was inspired in part by wikileaks. and in switzerland, a group has -- the u.s. postal service says it will default on billions of the dollars owed to a health care fund on sunday. the postal service also says it will continue to deliver mail and pay employees. postal officials say congress adjourned last week without passing legislation needed to pay the $5.6 billion they owe.

in southern california a 31- acre brush fire is now under control. started about 4:00 this afternoon in the hills. dry and hot conditions made it tough to fight the fire. but luckily it burned in a rural area and was never a real threat to people. ktvu's david stevenson tells us why critical mass are expecting 2,000 cyclists. >> reporter: critical mass is expecting people from all over the country.

>> when critical mass started bicycling was not a mainstream thing. if you were cycling you were often harassed. >> the whole idea of critical mass is not that it's a protest but a community. like a bubble of safety moving through traffic. >> reporter: it has inspired similar events throughout the world and played a part in the explosive world of bay area cycling and its emergence as a political force. today 3-1/2% of all commuters use bikes each day in san francisco. >> they get in your way, they go all in between traffic, and i think it disrupts a lot of traffic. >> reporter: 2,000 cyclists are expected for critical mass. bad news for motorists who complain of clashes. >> there are a couple that are bad actors who don't know how to behave in public. they're a problem and that's a problem for every critical mass event. >> just remain patient if

you're caught up in a critical mass event. >> reporter: this year there'll be a contingent of children riding to celebrate the anniversary. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. a bill signed into law today changes the way california public universities make changes. a 90 day wait period is required before an increase can go into effect. the nation's four largest rental car companies have agreed to no longer rent or sell vehicles that have been recalled. this involves hertz, avis, enterprise and dollar thrifty. the agreement comes after senator barbara boxer pushed for a ban. boxer has said changes were needed after two sisters were killed in santa cruz while driving a rental car that was under a recalled notice.

and temperatures temperatures warmed up today as we stated but it's going to be a little cooler tomorrow. it's been real dense right along the coast along highway 1 on the great highway. low visibles in the morning. even some drizzle. i think tomorrow we will see fog to this point over to berkeley. i don't suspect it's going to get up over the hills. tomorrow is going to be a lot like today but i think it'll be a couple of degrees cooler. the big theme is a big warm up as we head into saturday, sunday and monday. did warm up today but the big warm up will be saturday, sunday and monday. in the inland bay valleys into the low 90s. it's going to be hot. one of the warmer or hotter days of the year. not unusual for september or even october. this is the time of year something like this could happen. the fog is hanging around, i don't know if it's going away this weekend. right now we're looking for the fog to kind of hang in at the

coast. saturday and sunday temperatures ratchet up. will it be heat? i don't think so, i think it'll just be very warm to hot. right along the coast. tries to get inland but the marine layer is suppressed. i think we will see lots of mid- 80s. upper 80s and a few low 90s. as we walk through the bay area microclimates we're going to see the cooling at the coast. you get south toward the morgan hill area and you start seeing mid- and upper 80s and low 90s . that is your friday forecast. your weekend forecast you could add five to 10 degrees to some of these numbers so it's going to be significantly warmer as we get into your weekend. in the east bay you're going to see 87 in walnut creek and in danville. just 80 in san jose but that number is going to come up on saturday and sunday. what else comes up besides the temperatures the fire danger.
